In a typical year Wildcare admits 31 Eastern Box Turtles, 640 Songbirds and 46 Raccoon Kits.

Permit Required

Unless you have the proper state and federal permits, it is illegal to possess or care for any native wildlife. That now includes the Eastern Box Turtle.

WildCare Inc. is licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the United States Food and Drug Administration (USDA).

All WildCare volunteers have been trained. Many are certified by the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC). Team Leaders have a combined experience of over sixty years.

Animal in Custody?

Any small box lined with T shirt material (no terry cloth) with holes punched in the top is sufficient to place your animal in custody. Place a thin dry wash cloth between the bottom of the box and a heating pad turned to low. Only put half the box on the heating pad. Check after 5 minutes to be sure it isn't too hot. After handling the animal, wash with soap for 20 seconds. Keep pets and children away. Do NOT feed this animal anything.

Orphaned?

Many baby animals are not really orphaned. Put your pets in the house and do not handle. Do NOT feed this animal anything-especially cow's milk.

Afraid to Apprehend?

When you are worried it might have rabies or that it will hurt you, it is often possible to place an empty laundry basket over the animal. A weight on top of the overturned basket, such as a brick, will keep it in place. Put your pets in the house. Keep children at a distance. Do NOT feed this animal anything.
